What causes bullying?
Some bullies do it when a feeling of powerlessness and insecurity gather them, they start to pull others to even lower level by attacking their self-esteem to make their selves feel more powerful and superior than others. They find it easier to attack others than to fight their own problems. Some of the bullies come from the dysfunctional families where they witness their parent’s aggressive behavior towards them, their sibling and other family member. In other cases, the bully targets the person he is jealous of or frustrated with. The person who is smarter than them, who gets good grades or whatever the reason might be behind their jealously or frustration, the victim becomes the easy target.
The other cause of bullying is when the bully doesn’t care what other feels, they lack the empathy and like to see others in pain. They hurt other without having the sense of what pain is the victim or others around going to feel. They get the pleasure out of seeing the reaction of the person they are hurting. It becomes their habit to harass innocent peoples. It is believed that some of the bullies were once a victim of being bullied themselves. According to Dr. Peter Sheras, “40% of bullies are themselves bullied at home or at school.” These bullies find satisfaction to target others because, for them, it is easier to target other than to take revenge with the person they got bullied from.
The main cause of bulling is when bystanders, the people who witness bullying prefer to stay quiet because of the fear of getting targeted themselves. Some of them become the part of the bullying by either laughing about it or supporting the behavior of the bully.
